I love the game of golf since the tender age of 12 Ive seen the sport grow and change tremendously. I recall playing the 9 for $9 at the country course, and using my left over dollar for fries at the halfway house. Back in that day, the driving range was a stop and sock. Oh- and golf carts didnt have roofs!
I love golf..I have been playing the golf since the tender age of 12 and over the years, Ive see it grow and change tremendously. Heck, when I was a young kid, I used to play 9 for 9 bucks at the country course. I used the dollar left over to pay for fries at a halfway house. Back in the day the driving range was a stop and sock and golf carts didnt have roofs. Better days"better times..
Let me pontificate for a moment"and I have over 30 years of game play to back me up. Ive taught the game of golf and Ive won my share of rounds. The reality is if you want to start improving your game, beyond a shadow of a doubt (and I challenge any professional golfer to argue with me) is that you have to P-R-A-C-T-I-C-E! (I know. I know. Youve heard that before, but its the truth and you cant get around it!) The magic cure to improving golf games is practice and Im not talking about a driver...dont even start working on the long-ball until you can CHIP-PITCH-PUTT! If you need help with this, honestly, get help. Pay for a good lesson. Go to a pro for some tips. Left to work on your own, will only create terrible golf habits to contend with. You need to get the basic mechanics and then practice chipping, putting and pitching. I know that this isnt glamorous. In no way does it compare to watching your ball fly through the air. But I promise you this, if you can chip the ball by the hole and putt it in, you will see a dramatic improvement of your score and your overall game. Guaranteed! Its this type of practice that develops touch and feel sensitivity that only the great golfers have. And how do they get it? Yep- they practice, on real grass, chipping, pitching and putting ball after ball until their shots are consistently great. So now that Ive had the nerve to bring up practice, you probably are asking Ok- so how long will it take to see results? My answer to this is this: When you know that you no longer need to guess, then take it to the course! Also- let me apologize if this seemed like a rant. Im just trying to help based on what my experience is with this industry. The gold game is not about the longest drive or a putter with moon rocks in it. That game is about YOU and what you bring to it mentally. All great golfers know this and now, so do you
Oh and lastly, theres a ton to practicing with a purpose but a couple of quick tips.
1. Be mentally there when you are practicing.try imagining you are on the course shooting a round when you are chipping, pitching and putting. Theres a HUGE difference from practice to playing. Try to put yourself in the position that you are making these shots during a round.
2. We are all human and we all are fighting the billions of thoughts that run through our minds at any given moment. Before you rush to a round, calm down and calibrate yourself. You want your mind and body to be at ease so you can optimize your swings. Dont just run out to the course (and all golfers do- including me!), but rather, do a warm up. Assess how youre swinging today so you know what you need to work on. Youre shot is always changing and you have to learn to work with this. That is one of the great qualities of golf!
By the way, I created a little tip sheet that is pretty funny. If you want to see the 15 blunders made at a driving range. Visit my website. Its free. Its funny and it will help you out.
